how to get out of a speeding ticket
Know the GAME PLAN
We decided to go ask a bunch of cop buddies what are some of the excuses people use on them to try to get out of traffic tickets. Unfortunately, we didn’t get them drunk enough to really spill which excuses were the best; however, they did give us a few pointers on getting out of a speeding ticket.
1. Be polite: while it certainly doesn’t always work, it is a very critical first step. One officer states, “Anyone that isn’t polite to me will surely get a ticket – no matter the excuse.”
2. Sell your story: Some cops have sympathy (yes we said sympathy). In order for them to believe your excuse, you have to be authentic. Even if your excuse is a common one, like you didn’t know you were going over the speed limit by X miles per, you still have to ask in a way that gains sympathy from the officer. We’re not suggesting you act out a melodrama here, but act in a way, that if you were the officer, you would be sympathetic to your own cause.
3. Don’t be annoying: If it looks like you’re not going to get cut any slack, after politely trying, do not whine, argue absurdly, etc. You’ll only make it worse.
4. Don’t be shy, ask for a Warning: After considering steps 1-3, ask for a warning. It doesn’t hurt to try, but make sure you sell it properly, just like you would sell the story. Act in a friendly, just like you would ask a pal for a super serious favor.
5. Truthfully, if you’re caught in a speed trap – almost no excuse will work: You’re sooo going to get a ticket. The best thing to do in this case is to follow steps 1-4.
6. Self Incrimination is BAD for you: Don’t say anything that will make the excuse worse! One crazy story we heard about was about this teenager who said he had to take care of some business with his clients, which was the reason for his speeding. When asked what business he had to handle, the teenager responded, “I have some drugs that I…” Well, it doesn’t really matter what he said after that point. By law, and by the very duty of a police officer, anything that looks incriminating will be used in court and the officer will act accordingly in the situation. The least of your worries at that point – is a speeding ticket.
